I have had several of my ancestors fight in the 154th New York. The first person I
learned about was my Great-Great grandfather Marshall Shannon. When my
grandfather died, I was given Marshall's
picture, and several documents from his service in the war. I began to do
research on Marshall
and later learned about two other relatives, Edgar Shannon and Truman Shannon.
The Shannons came from a prominent farming family in
Western New York and were not the only group of family members who
enlisted within the same regiment.
Marshall was once captured at the battle of
Gettysburg but soon escaped.
His enlistment within the 154th came to an end after cutting off the toes on one
foot while chopping fire wood. He was later transferred to the Invalid Corps.
Edgar became a Lieutenant and went on to become a prominent citizen of his town,
Leon, NY. He even served a couple of terms in the state
legislature. Truman lost his life in the battle of
Chancellorsville and was buried in an unmarked grave some where on
the field of battle.
