James Chilton's Shaving
Mirror
This is a photograph of the shaving mirror believed to have been owned by James Chilton and was
brought over on the Mayflower. James Chilton died and was buried at the
Pilgrim's first landing at Provincetown. He became the first Pilgrim to die in
the New World. His daughter, Mary Chilton inherited it when he died along with
three acres of land.
John and Mary Chilton Winslow became very wealthy and eventually moved into a
mansion in Boston. In his will, John left his ketches (sailing ships) The
Speedwell and John's Adventure to his heirs. Mary had a long will and left many
things to many descendants...including "a great cupboard" which she left to her
daughter, Susannah Winslow Lantham. It is believed that James Chilton's shaving
mirror was in that great cupboard and was passed down to a Great-Great Aunt
Harriette by William Arthur Shannon (Son of Samuel & Eliza). William was unable
to tell who exactly brought the mirror over on the Mayflower. Great-Great Aunt
Harriette then gave it to a cousin, Frances Leet Reddaway.
