154th NY Monument at Chancellorsville
The monument is in the shape of a crescent, the badge of the
154th New York's Eleventh Army Corps. It is made of
Southern Blue Grey granite, and measures four feet high and eight inches thick.
The inscription on the front of the monument reads:
154TH NEW YORK STATE VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
1ST BRIGADE, 2ND DIVISION, 11TH CORPS
"THE HARDTACK REGIMENT
ANCHOR OF THE BUSHBECK LINE
NEAR DOWDALL'S TAVERN
BATTLE OF CHANCELLORSVILLE
MAY 2, 1863
The inscription on the back of the monument reads:
590 PRESENT FOR DUTY
240 KILLED, WOUNDED AND CAPTURED
DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE REGIMENT
BY IT'S DESCENDANTS
MAY 1996
The monument stands south of and adjacent to the eastbound lanes of Route 3 (the
Orange Turnpike), about a mile west of the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor
Center. The monument is located at the edge of the field in which the 154th New
York fought on the evening of May 2, 1863, and, like the regiment's line, faces
the west.
